Scooter license requirements in Bali

Your license must cover the type and engine size of the scooter you ride. A license limited to 125 cc does not cover a 155 cc or 160 cc scooter. Check the actual bike specifications and any restrictions on your documents before booking.

A valid Indonesian motorcycle license is another option. Indonesian categories are SIM C for motorcycles up to 250 cc, SIM C I for motorcycles over 250 cc up to 500 cc, and SIM C II for motorcycles over 500 cc.

There is also an ASEAN recognition agreement for qualifying domestic licenses during temporary visits. The agreement excludes temporary, provisional and learner licenses, and requires a certified English translation when the license is not in English. It only covers the vehicle categories your license permits.

Apply through the authorized issuing organization for your license country and confirm which permit is accepted in Indonesia.

An IDP translates your existing driving entitlements. It does not add a motorcycle category or replace your national license. Carry both documents together and check their expiry dates before travelling.

If your documents do not authorize you to ride the chosen motorcycle, arrange suitable transport while you resolve the requirements.

Bring your passport and your driving documents to handover. Lilu’s minimum rental age is 18.

Our published document requirements are a national motorcycle license with an official IDP covering motorcycles, or an appropriate Indonesian motorcycle license. If you plan to use an ASEAN-issued license, contact us before booking so we can confirm the rental paperwork.

Both the rider and passenger must wear an SNI-standard motorcycle helmet. Make sure it fits properly and fasten the chin strap on every ride.

Carry your required driving documents and the bike’s STNK, and be ready to present them during a roadside check. If stopped, remain calm and follow the officer’s instructions.

Personal travel insurance

Check with your insurer before renting. Ask whether your policy covers the scooter’s engine size, your license category, riding as a passenger, medical treatment and evacuation. Motorcycle riding may require additional coverage or be excluded.

Cover for the rental scooter

Do not assume that scooter rental in Bali includes comprehensive “full-risk” insurance. Theft or total-loss cover is not the same as cover for scratches, minor accidents or dropping the bike.

Lilu rentals do not include comprehensive scooter insurance. Discuss any additional damage protection directly with our team before booking, and confirm its scope, exclusions and your remaining liability in writing. Our optional scratch cover is limited to scratches under its published terms; it is not comprehensive insurance.

• Confirm that you have the bike’s STNK.
• Check your insurance and any separate rental damage-cover terms.
• Fit and fasten your helmet, and check the brakes, lights and tires.
